Viewing the poem Eshet Chayil through a contemporary feminist reclamation of womanhood, this papercut examines a woman whose beauty glows gold from within.
Inspired by the intricate lines of an Aubrey Beardsley Art Nouveau print, this piece reimagines the traditional “Woman of Valor.”
For generations, the Eshet Chayil poem has been recited on Friday nights—often viewed as a praise of a woman’s endless, unseen domestic labor. But look closer at the text, and you find a fierce, multilingual tycoon managing a global wine enterprise.
This artwork explores that beautiful, frustrating tension. Elevated with Semitic features and luminous gold painted beneath the cutouts of her hair, she stands as a woman who holds her beauty, intellect, and resilience entirely for herself. Her worth is defined by her—not by her utility to others.
